Bayan Telecommunications Boost Broadband Connectivity for Rural Areas with IPSTAR

The growth of the Web seems unstoppable as more and more Filipinos rely on the internet for business communications and solutions.

In a country geographically divided into thousands of islands, getting decent internet access has been a big challenge particularly in the rural areas. But even with the overwhelming increase in Internet users in 2009, the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in these areas are affected by the lack of affordable connectivity options for their day-to-day business transactions.

To address this gap, maverick telecommunications company, Bayan Telecommunications (Bayan) decided to partner with Thaicom Plc., the regional leader in broadband satellite services through its IPSTAR satellite. Mr. Joevel Rivera, Bayan's VP for Product Development and Management, explains "IPSTAR covers almost the entire Philippine archipelago with bandwidth capacity to support up to 1.5 Gigabits per second dedicated to the Philippine island alone. This capacity is sufficient to support tens of thousands of Internet devices throughout the country. This brings broadband Internet access anywhere in the Philippines and provides better and more cost-effective connectivity solutions to business in previously underserved areas."

The partnership with THAICOM-IPSTAR allows Bayan to expand its Broadband Internet access services anywhere in the Philippines. This benefits not only the consumers who do not have any means of Internet access but also business establishments who have not been able to expand operations in certain areas due to the prohibitive cost of communications network. According to Mr. Patompob Suwansiri, Regional VP of Marketing and Sales of Thaicom Plc., "Bayan's comprehensive portfolio of connectivity solutions will further be complemented by this partnership on IPSTAR satellite services. Bayan can be the one-stop-shop for all communications services anywhere in the country. This technology, now being adopted by Bayan, also ensures seamless integration of existing applications, hardware and systems that are needed in empowering the Web usage of local businesses and rural branches."
