Hello, Just wanted to know if anyone here is experiencing problems with regards to downloading files from File Hosting sites such as Megaupload, Rapidshare, Hotfile, etc. I have been having problems with regards to download speeds when downloading files from file hosting sites. I have this problem for almost two weeks now from the time my internet got disrupted due to a downed cable near our area. I have a 2.5 Mbps plan and it shows when i test my speed from Speedtest.net However, all my downloads from said file hosting sites have a download speed of not more than 25Kbps. This is consistent for all hosting sites I've tried. Could anyone here share their experience if they have encountered similar problems? Thanks!

I have issues with Rapidshare and other sites that offer premium download services. I expect that though since I only use their "free" service. Heck. I am not going to pay for their download services when I can get the files that I need on occasions from other sites.
If you are using the "FREE" service, chances are you will run into these kinds of problems as these sites throttle the bandwidth used by the ones using their free service.
How about regular sites? Not coming from these kinds of sites, do you also encounter the same slowness or is it just limited to this "pay for download" sites?

Sir Mikos, I'm having the same thing. It just started like 2 weeks ago. Before I was getting a maximum dl speeds of up to 80kbps in non-SOD times but now, even in SOD times I get an utterly disappointing 5-20kbps download speeds. The only time I get decent download speeds is from like 5am - 10am then it goes back to its abnormal state. I checked all of my equipment here and everything seems quite fine. I just don't get why it suddenly changed its performance. I'm verry verry disappointed.
I'm kind of scared to call the tech support as I already have trauma with poor customer service. It's just based on experience.
Please, if there's any help you can do. Please comment on this thread and yes, other users can comment about their same problems regarding this issue.

I would have to disagree with Mikos' post. Even though these file hosting sites "throttle" download speeds, it should not go down to "slower than dial-up" speeds. I have a very fast connection in Makati using another ISP (6Mbps). Using that connection, I noticed that Megaupload "throttles" my download speed to around 300 Kb/s, which is still way beyond what my BayanDSL at home can provide (I'm on plan 1699, 1.2Mbps -> max theoretical download speed is only around 156 Kb/s). I tried downloading the exact same stuff in Megaupload at home using BayanDSL, and it topped at a very slow 5-10 Kb/s. The exact scenario happens when I'm also downloading from Mediafire and Rapidshare.

Read my post... I did NOT say that what he is getting is normal. I simply stated that those sites throttle the free service and advised a possibility of running into such problems. I also did try downloading using our company's connection (I have admin privileges so I am able to do so as I please) and I still get into problems with them. So then again, they really do throttle the free service. Nor did I blame that for his issues.
By the way I posted this:Mikos wrote:How about regular sites? Not coming from these kinds of sites, do you also encounter the same slowness or is it just limited to this "pay for download" sites? If my response was conclusive I would not even post that.
Incidentally, if you also have issues with the BayanDSL connection since you posted that you also do have issues downloading from such sites, then by all means feel free to start your own thread. That way, we can freely discuss also your problem. As it is the TS has become inactive already. Following the rules, I may have to close this thread soon.

@Mikos Yes, you didn't say it exactly, but it looks to me like you are putting the blame on these free hosting sites. The throttling issue only happens when your download speed is greater than what their servers allow (for example more than 300Kb/s), so that wouldn't be a logical cause for our problems. Doing speedtest within the country yielded normal, but just try doing speedtests outside and you will notice significant drops (more than 50%) in speed. It may be that BayanDSL cannot handle its current subscriber population, or the fiber optic cables, that link us to other countries, are overloaded. I just tried doing a speedtest to faraway locations like Seattle, Washington (where one of Mediafire's servers are located) and the connection is really really slow (~0.25-0.3 Mbps) using BayanDSL.
Visiting regular sites isn't a problem, since loading times are not that long, and they don't take too much bandwidth, as opposed to downloading, which maximizes the use of your bandwidth. Anyway, I'm not starting a fight here so please go easy on me :)

We have a saying in Philosophy that unless it is directly implied, or it is specifically stated, it cannot be assumed from the statement given. I merely stated an observation but I did not indicate it is the cause of his problems. I do understand it though why you would say that. It is usual to have hermeneutical issues every now and then in a healthy discussion. Do not worry though... I am not here for a fight... Just here for discussion. kaiser23 wrote:The throttling issue only happens when your download speed is greater than what their servers allow (for example more than 300Kb/s), so that wouldn't be a logical cause for our problems. Anyway, I'm not starting a fight here so please go easy on me :) It is a standard operating procedure that in terms of testing the speed of the line, you only use the server hosted by your ISP as this rules out other factors that will come into play when using other speed test servers hosted by other ISPs. This is the practice of any ISP. The only way for us to find out if the connection has issues is for one to check one's own network first before we got out of the network. If congestion is the problem then even a mere speedtest within the network should fail owing to the number of people using the line. But if the problem only persist once it goes out of the network, then other factors are already at play here. We have to remember that BayanDSL passes thru gateways shared with other ISPs in the country. This is where the bottleneck is. I do know, however, which companies have direct stakes at such facilities. I need not mention those companies here since I am in no position to give those info. The discussion why international sites have issues is a pretty big picture to go into as there are so many factors involved with it. But definitely, if you get normal speeds within the network, then congestion alone due to the number of subscribers is definitely not the issue.
Although I will also understand why I seemingly do not have such problems with other download sites with the company internet simply because we have direct tunneling to our servers in the US. Thus, we bypass the usual route that most residential customers go thru. Honestly though, I never really trusted using Rapidshare, MegaUpload or any of those download sites for anything. Perhaps though this is a matter of preference. After all, I do have access to most of the programs and files that I do need.

and you will get what mod Mikos that he is exactly saying. You are so right on that DNNIWA. It has always been my character to read the fine print in almost everything that I get myself into. And reading the fine print with such file hosting sites, granting even that they give me very fast download speeds (wishful thinking), I still would not trust their service. After all, I have to be extra careful with the files I am getting from them, not to mention the fact that I find it cumbersome to validate that the files I am getting from them are indeed valid and worry free. The time for me to validate and test it is just too much for me to even consider getting stuff from them.
