This will be the general updates thread. Relevant updates will be posted here either by the Bayan Moderators, External Moderators, and BayanDSL Forumers (employees of BayanDSL who are Forum Members). This thread is not open to other Forumers. It is kept open as not all BayanDSL Forumers are moderators. Posts not coming from any of the above mentioned will be auto deleted.

Since this was already emailed by technical support to some Forumers inquiring via email I decided I might as well share the info I got here.

This morning March 8, 2010, several telecoms firms maintaining the undersea cables servicing data and voice in the Southeast Pacific region have discovered problems in the subterranean cables. The cables sustained cuts from under currents following the earthquake that hit Chile last week. Currently the following network cables are affected: EAC and and the APCN 2. There are two batches of repairs that will be undertaken to restore the cables to normal operations. There are no reported service interruptions while the repair is undertaken.

Repair on the EAC network of subterranean cables is estimated, as of the moment, to be finished the earliest by March 15, 2010. However, repair on the APCN 2 cable, as of this writing (and from the feedback given to the different ISPs), currently has no ETR yet as it has the most number of segments affected.

Internet and data services of BayanDSL will remain to be operational. However, some of our connections will be re-routed to the undersea cables servicing the area in Indonesia and Thailand, while some will be re-routed to Malaysia and Australia, to bypass the affected regions while repair is underway.

Other than the latencies involved with certain internet applications or websites, internet service in the region will continue without interruptions.

If you continue to experience problems with your DSL like intermittent connections, slow speeds not associated with latencies, please coordinate your concern with the technical support hotline.

Please note that his advisory is for Bayan Forum Members Only.

Dude, I tried googling about the undersea cable cuts that you said, but the only one coming up is the one that happened last Aug. 2009. Could you please post any official news regarding this matter? Or is this just a cover for the poor service bayantel gives us?

You won't see this on Google as this is not circulated on the web. I was advised of this by the Bayan Moderators. Unfortunately, what they showed me is a confidential document. I cannot post it here since that is an internal circular. If you noticed, I am not that detailed about the advisory and I even indicated that this is only for BayanDSL registered Forumers/subscribers.

Usually events like these that are not generally impacting are not published. This is the practice of many telecomms firms. As long as the internet service is up and everyone can access the internet, this is usually internal. We sometimes share such information to our fellow forumers if necessary.

I do not think it is a cover because when I used to work for a DSL company also, we have a lot of these that is circulated in the office but never reach our clients for the plain and simple reason that it does not generally impact them. While it may affect them in one way or the other, their internet service is generally up and usable, thus, it is not made public. The only time that these things are published is when there is an outage like what happened last August 2009 where the internet in the Southeast Pacific Region was literally rendered unusable for hours barring the re-routing. In this case, while the cables sustained cuts, the service was not interrupted. Thus, there was no need to make it public as it is not generally impacting. Please take note that these announcements do not come from the ISP you are subscribed to. It comes from the international telecomms firms maintaining those subterranean cables. Thus, whether they make it public or not, is beyond the ISPs availing of their service.

That will depend on the telecomms firms maintaining those cables. Outside ni Bayan kasi yung problem dito. Will update this thread again once I get word from the Bayan Moderators.

Update as of March 18:

There are currently 3 subterranean cables that carry traffic for internet users in the Philippines going out of Asia, the EAC, APCN2 and the Intra-Asia network of cables. As of March 17, only the EAC cable and Intra-Asia cables are operational, with the EAC being restored under normal operations by March 31 2010. The APCN2 cable as of 1AM March 17 suffered additional major cable breaks that rendered the Philippine Islands temporarily isolated via the APCN2 cables. To augment this, a 4 way re-routing was done as indicated in our previous updates, with our connections being re-routed to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia to bypass the APCN2 cables. The repair vessels slated to fix the damages of the APCN2 cable is due to arrive at the affected areas by March 19 2010. There are no ETRs established as to when the APCN2 affected segments will be fully operational. Internet services in the region will remain operational due to the re-routing of internet traffic done to bypass the affected areas.

Further updates will be provided as necessary. Please note that this update is only for registered Bayan Forum Members.

Pero believe me sir dahil napakaraming tawag kanina. And majority of them are residential lines. Angel

From around 7 AM to 1130 AM kanina, congested na ang CSDIP (411-2000) at Customer Service (412-1212) dahil sa dami ng reklamo with their internet connection.
